SAN FRANCISCO – August 7, 2003 Gregory Howell & Associates, Inc., continues to support multicultural education and community achievement through contributions to the JET Alumni Association of Northern California Scholarship Program.
The JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program was instituted in 1987 by the Japanese government’s Ministry of Education. The Program selects and assigns young professionals from all over the world to Japan’s municipal offices, prefectural offices and public schools to foster internationalization and to enhance language education. JET participants also actively participate in a variety of local events, volunteer activities and community projects during their tenure in Japan.
Applicants compete vigorously for a limited number of posts throughout Japan, and judged upon a combination of communication skills, education, professional experience and diplomacy skills. The Alumni Association is a worldwide network of highly skilled professionals who completed a one, two or three-year contract of employment through the JET Program in Japan.
G H A Travel President and Co-Founder, Gregory Howell, served a three-year tenure in the JET Program as the City of Yokohama’s Coordinator for International Relations. Upon his return from Japan, he founded the JET Alumni Association’s Northern California chapter. Mr. Howell served as the chapter’s President until 1999, and remains an active member, directing a portion of G H A’s philanthropy to support the JETAA Northern California Scholarship Program.
“Establishing a scholarship fund has long been an objective of the alumni association. Our members have all lived and worked in Japan and we are committed to strengthening cross-cultural ties and to promoting local understanding and education on Japan. The scholarship allows us to accomplish these goals and give back to the community,” says Howell.
This year’s scholarship recipient is Henry M. Gunn H.S. graduate Grace Ho, who will attend the University of California at Davis this fall to study bioengineering. As secretary of the Japanese Honor Society in high school, she demonstrated her continuing passion for Japanese language and culture.
Application is open to graduating high school students in all San Francisco Bay Area counties (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo and Santa Clara). Applicants are judged upon academic accomplishment, a personal essay, recommendations and a demonstrated interest in Japan. G H A Travel proudly supports the JETAA Northern California Chapter’s continued philanthropy in the Bay Area.
