Biotei - a Pioneer Among Japan’s New Crop of Organic Restaurants
The term ‘organic’ is becoming an increasingly problematic description - generally, the term refers to the farming method which strictly prohibits the use of chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides. Organic produce is therefore much more expensive, but is thought to be much healthier and safer to eat.
In a country where raw meat of all varieties are consumed in mass quantities without incident, one might assume that regular produce already adheres to extremely high quality standards. In the case of Biotei, a small, charming restaurant in central Kyoto, ‘organic’ describes a variety of healthy fare made from whatever is fresh that day, complemented with home-style miso soup and, upon request, brown rice - an unusual offering in Japan.
The term ‘organic’ has also become largely synonomous with ‘vegetarian;’ while this is generally not the case in Japan, the friendly staff at Biotei will happily accommodate most special dietary requests. The menu is comprised of hearty country-style dishes - braised beef and daikon, sesame-dressed greens and mouthwatering fried oysters. Beer and saké are available - while a cold beer works as a perfect accompaniment to many of their dishes, the delicious fruit-infused saké is highly recommended. Biotei also offers a surprising variety of herbal teas - another rarity in Japan.
Delicious vegetable side dishes are abundant and surprisingly affordable. The addition of miso soup and rice to any of these creates a well-rounded, satisfying meal for approximately !,500 to 2000 yen (US$12.50 - $17.00).
Biotei’s décor reflects the country flavor of its food - charming, simple, rustic yet refined - perfect for small groups on a casual night out. Seating is limited and a bit tight, but the warm, friendly service definitely makes up for this. Since its opening in 1983, Biotei has been a neighborhood favorite - be sure to arrive early because the place fills up quickly.
